The town of Tiburon enjoys one of the most beautiful views in the
world, located just across the bay from San Francisco,
with a view of the Golden Gate
Bridge. From the other
side of Tiburon you can see the East
Bay (Richmond,
Oakland, and
beyond). What is now the Tiburon peninsula was, in the beginning, home to at
least fifty Indian villages. Shell mounds, petroglyphs on the rock face of Ring Mountain,
and the occasional find of mortars and cooking stones are testimony to this
portion of Tiburon's history. John Reed established this area and the
excellent school district bears his name. In the 1880's, the coming of the
broad-gauge railroad transformed the four and a half mile-long peninsula. The
town was created as a result of the railroad, and a long line of ferries
carrying passengers and rail cars the six miles across the bay to San Francisco. The first
elegant homes were built by wealthy San Franciscans as summer retreats.
Tiburon offers great outdoor entertainment. There are several parks, a scenic
bike path spanning the entire town, a waterfront lawn and path for you to
enjoy a picnic or just a stroll. Sailing is a popular sport and the
Corinthian and Tiburon Yacht Clubs provide berths for hundreds of sailboats
for local yachtsmen. Public and private tennis and swimming facilities are
also available to residents. Ferries run to Angel
Island, a California State Park,
and once there you can hike, bike, or play on the beaches. Tiburon will host
its third annual Film Festival this year and the Tiburon Triathlon will be
held for the fourteenth year. Tiburon has a unique take on the Welcome Wagon
- instead of the traditional welcome basket of goods and coupons, the Bel-Tib
Newcomers Club offers a variety of events to welcome and engage new
residents. Informal activities and scheduled events include a book club, a
bridge group, dances, meditation, dining, hiking, golf, tennis, and a wine
tasting group.
